Los Angeles Lakers forward Ron Artest recently appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live, but there was one problem with his appearance...actually there were a few.
The outrageous NBA star walked onto the set wearing nothing but his boxer, carrying a shirt and jeans in his hands. Though the appearance was more or less comedic, I'm sure many African Americans were very happy to see a well-known African American athlete walking onto the set of a national television show wearing his underwear.
Aside from the semi-nudity, Artest had to perpetrate the black stereotype of "pimping" things out. Artest shaved "Jimmy Kimmel Live" into the back of his head. Artest said he made the decision to engrave the shows name into his head in order to "hoodalize" the show.
Personally, I think it is great for the NBA to have a star that has a sense of humor and is not embarrassed to be outgoing on national television, but Artest's appearance did nothing to help racial stereotypes about African American athletes.
